CM reinvokes ‘Our tax, Our right’ campaign, calls upon Kannadigas to rise against Centre’s discrimination
The HinduLaunching a fresh tirade against the Centre for allocating a “meagre” share of funds to Karnataka in the recent round of devolution, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah again invoked the “Our Tax, Our Right” campaign and called upon all Kannadigas to rise against this discrimination by fighting for their rightful share. Though the Union Budget doubled from ₹24.42 lakh crore in 2018-19 to ₹48.2 lakh crore in 2024-25, Karnataka’s share has stagnated despite its significant contributions. Karnataka, with its high contributions, should receive at least ₹1 lakh crore annually.” Questioning the logic behind devolution of grants, he wondered: “Why should Karnataka, which contributes ₹4.5 lakh crore annually to the national exchequer, receive only ₹45,000 crore in tax share and ₹15,000 crore in grants — a mere 13 paise for every rupee we contribute?” Referring to a few States getting substantial amount of grants, he said States such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan are “showered with funds.” The 15th Finance Commission reduced Karnataka’s tax share from 4.713% to 3.647%, costing the State ₹79,770 crore over five years, he recalled. On BJP leaders Training his guns on the Opposition BJP, the Chief Minister said: “I waited a couple of days hoping that the BJP’s Karnataka leaders would muster the courage to speak up for Kannadigas.
