Kerala HC moved seeking posting of special prosecutor in evidence-tampering case against Antony Raju

I The Kerala High Court on Wednesday adjourned to January 23 hearing on a petition seeking appointment of a special public prosecutor for the conduct of a criminal case pending before the Nedumangad judicial magistrate court against MLA and former Transport Minister Antony Raju in connection with the tampering of evidence in a 1990 drug smuggling case. Later the police registered the case alleging that Mr. Raju conspired with court clerk Solaman Joseph of Peroorkada to secure the acquittal of the accused. The petitioner said that the assistant public prosecutor attached to the magistrate court could not conduct the prosecution of such a high profile and sensational case, as he might be put under pressure from political parties. It was a fit case for appointing a special prosecutor since the Kerala High Court and the Supreme Court had observed that the conduct of Mr. Raju and the other accused eroded public trust in the judicial system and that the allegations were of such gravity that it interfered with the judicial functions and administration of justice.
