How Punjab-born, Oxford-educated Manmohan Singh found a home in Guwahati

India Today

"I was born in a distant and dusty village in a part of this subcontinent that is no longer in India. It is in Assam that I have finally found a home that has given me a sense of belonging," said then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2012, expressing his gratitude to the people of Assam. Manmohan Singh's association with the Guwahati address started in 1991, when he filed a nomination for the Upper House. However, even as the Prime Minister, Singh was a resident of house number 3989 of Guwahati's Nandan Nagar. "The Bogibeel Bridge, the Dhola Sadiya Bridge, the National Institute of Design in Jorhat, the North East Frontier Railway, the North East Industrial Development Policy were all developed under his leadership and guidance," said Gaurav Gogoi, Congress MP from Assam, recounting Singh's contributions to the state, in April.
