Experts emphasise the need for dementia-friendly hospitals
The HinduDementia India Alliance, in collaboration with the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers, has drafted the Dementia Friendly Hospital Checklist, said Radha S. Murthy, President of the NGO, speaking at the valedictory of the two-day International Dementia Care Conference that concluded in the city on Saturday. NIMHANS director Pratima Murthy emphasised the need for networking and collaboration among different stakeholders to ensure there are innovative and scalable solutions for dementia care. Dr. said currently, approximately 88 lakh people in India live with dementia, with an estimated prevalence rate of 7.4% among those over 60. Rajinder K. Dhamija, director, Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences, said, “With an ageing population and increasing prevalence of risk factors like diabetes, hypertension, and lifestyle diseases, the number of people affected by dementia is expected to rise significantly.” He said while early diagnosis and intervention are crucial in managing dementia, a significant portion of cases remain undiagnosed.
