Among rural women in the age group of 15-24 years with 12 or more years of education, 80 percent used a hygienic method for menstrual protection – 60 percent of them said they use a sanitary napkin while 43 percent said they use cloth.. Women from the highest wealth quintile – the top 20 percent of the population by income – are more than four times as likely to use a hygienic method of menstrual protection as women from the lowest wealth quintile. In 10 states, less than 50 percent rural women used hygienic menstrual protection In ten states – Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Tripura, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar – less than 50 percent young rural women used hygienic menstrual protection methods, NFHS-4 data show.
