
Alfred Health's new concussion clinic is putting patients on the path to recovery. Clinicians are already shocked by what they're seeing
ABCAt first Jasmin Weightman brushed off her concussion symptoms. "But clearly that's not the case for a good proportion of patients … and there's a lot of people who have serious ongoing problems from concussion and nowhere to go." Just the people who present to emergency departments with concussion will place huge demand on the clinic's team, he says, and with referrals from GPs on top of that, "I think the floodgates will open". "The thing that has always shocked me — and continues to shock me — is the misinformation and mismanagement of concussion patients," says Ms Maguire, who has worked in EDs for more than 20 years. "Even simply talking with about what's happening has been an amazing part of the experience — it's helped me explain it better to people around me, too," she says.
