Centre breaks deadlock with late-night nod for Manmohan Singh's memorial
India TodayIn a late-night development, the Centre agreed to locate space for a memorial of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after a war of words broke out between the BJP and the Congress. In a late-night release titled "Facts of the matter regarding a memorial for former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh", the ministry said the government had received a request to allocate space for a memorial for Singh from the Congress chief, news agency PTI reported. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting that Singh's last rites be conducted at a final resting place that would also house a memorial, in line with the tradition of honouring statesmen with dedicated memorials. Scores of leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu, PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi visited Manmohan Singh's residence on Friday to pay their last respects.
